What does my pup need for winter?

Winter is coming.

By the time this is live, it’s probably already here.

Salted streets and sub-zero temperatures aren’t exactly ideal for potty walks this time of year. If your dog is anything like Cooper, they’re officially on #poopstrike2018. Whether your dog refuses to leave the couch, or is a total snow bunny, we’ve rounded up our cold weather must-haves.

1. A great coat

If your pup is going to be spending a lot of time outdoors this winter or has especially short fur, a winter coat is important.

Some of our favorites:

  • This Dogo Pet Urban Runner coat (featured in the cover photo of this post!) Is great for it’s extra warm fleece liner, step-in velcro-less fit, and stylish design. It’s perfect for staying on dogs who run around like nuts and is our go-to dog park coat.

  • This Outward Hound Silverton coat, for it’s weather-proof coating, pockets for Cooper to carry her own poop bags on hikes, and easy-fit design. ( bonus points- it comes in pink)

  • This Tooth And Honey Funnel Neck Pullover for it’s extra cozy fleece and turtleneck to keep necks and ears covered. It’s great on its own or layered under a heavier coat. Plus, the designs are ridiculously cute! Their Etsy shop has more patterns and re-stocks weekly.

2. Paw protection

Snow means road salt, and road salt means cracked, draw paw pads. To avoid potentially painful paws, it’s important to keep paws protected.

Some of our favorites:

  • Mushers Wax- We use this wax all year round! It’s pup-safe, wipes off easily, and moisturizes paws while it protects from cold and salt. It doubles as protection against hot asphalt in the summer, too.

  • Pawz Booties -They may look like balloons, but these paw covers are disposable, inexpensive, and add an extra layer of protection between paws and the ground

  • Bubble Paws- similar to Pawz, but these booties are a bit more reusable and easier to put on. We love the velcro strap around the ankle and the larger opening, making it much easier to slip onto your dog’s paws.

3. Skincare for pups

Yep, you read that right. Winter is a time for chapped lips and dry hands for humans, it’s only natural your pup might be feeling the same way. We try to prevent itchy, dry skin with a few naturally moisturizing products.

Some of our favorites:

  • Coconut oil. Plain old coconut oil. We like to take a very small amount and rub it directly into Cooper’s fur to moisturize right at the source, or add a bit to her food.

  • Zesty Paws Salmon Oil Supplements- Like coconut oil, fish oil is great for your pup’s skin. We love Zesty Paws supplements for this, but regular ol’ fish oil will work just as well.

  • Dry Shampoo- rolling around in yellow snow can mean more baths, and more baths can mean dry skin. We love Nootie’s Warm Vanilla Cookie dry shampoo and shampoo combo to keep Cooper smelling delicious and feeling great in between baths

  • Earthbath Hypo-Allergenic Grooming Wipes- Avoid the bath all together. These natural wipes are great for getting rid of dirt and grime from your pup without fighting them for bath time. We use these daily, and a tub lasts forever.
